Grow Your Own Wasabi Plants
Congratulations on purchasing your set of Wasabi Plants-Set of 3 cultivated on the verdant island of Ireland. These plants will be delivered to you via Ireland Express or Royal Mail. Upon receiving your wasabi plant, you should immediately pot it in a container with at least 9 litres and drainage holes. Begin by placing a layer of pea shingle at the bottom of the pot to cover these holes, which helps ensure proper drainage throughout the growing period. Next, fill the pot with a rich mix of fertile soil and compost to promote robust root development.
It’s crucial to position the plant in a location that avoids direct sunlight, providing ample indoor or outdoor shade. Wasabi thrives in moist conditions, but overwatering should be avoided to prevent soaking the plant for extended periods. During planting, ensure the crown of the wasabi plant is slightly above the soil level, facilitating unimpeded growth of the leaves and stems.
Wasabi plants are entirely edible, offering spicy rhizomes and tasty edible wasabi leaves and stems. In their natural habitat in Japan, wasabia grows under tree canopies along mountain streams, shielded from direct sunlight. Mimic these conditions by finding a shaded spot in your garden, perhaps near a fence, under trees, or around the edge of a pond.
If you choose to grow your Wasabi Plants-Set of 3 indoors, keep the soil moist and nourish the plant with a gentle plant food like a diluted seaweed solution. Wasabi plants can grow large, with leaves and stems extending up to about 50 cm, so allow plenty of space between them.
As the plant matures, a rhizome will develop. Wasabi plants are hardy down to -5ºC, but to prevent frost damage, they should be covered with fleece during extremely cold nights.
